1) In this tute we are to use the online griffith library to research infomation on our upcoming essays, due in week 10. I think at this stage im going to focus my essay on The power of journalism and mass media's impact on society.

2) I used the online griffith library database to find resources relating to this topic and here are some of my findings:

  • "Journalism & Mass Communication Educator" - Article

Author(s): G Michael Killenberg, Robert Dardenne
Publication title: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator. Columbia: Spring 1997. Vol. 52, Iss. 1; pg. 52, 7 pgs
Source type: Periodical
Text Word Count 3359

"Killenberg and Dardenne argue that for news to become more relevant and useful to the whole community, journalists must communicate with people they ordinarily overlook or ignore. The authors' "News Coverage of Public Life" course is discussed."

I believe that these resources will give me a good overview into the subject of media power especially "Beyond Spin" I found that it had a few specific examples and reference points of other articles that deal with the subject. This is a very broad topic so i dont think i will have any problems with finding research material. This tute activity was very helpful because I'm now familiar with the online library database which I think ill be using quite a lot during my university life.

3) I found the following Mailing Lists that are relevent to the subject of new communication technologies and specifically what im focusing on, journalism and media power.

The Fibreculture reviews section of the site aims to provide a space for list members to post reviews of the most current literature in fields of interest to the Fibreculture network. We are also happy to archive material posted by list members such as interviews and articles of interest.

~ reference: http://www.fibreculture.org/reviews.html ~

This mailing list appears to have a lot of review on relevent subjects such as:

  • "New Philosophy for New Media"
  • "Stuff it: The Video Essay in the Digital Age"
  • "Women, Art, and Technology"

Week 3 - Activity 2

The Purpose of this blog entry is to discuss my personal use of new communication technologies in everyday life as a means of communicating with family and friends. Im a big fan of communication technology and use it a great deal on an everyday basis.

From simple phone conversations (both home and mobile) to text messaging, emails and online chatting, chances are im using at least one if not all of these methods of communication everyday and for most people like myself have been using these methods ever since early teenage years. Social networking plays a big role in the implemmentation and usage of some of these methods in that a lot of kids will want mobile phones and want use networking websites and applications such as 'MSN messager' and 'myspace' to contact and interact with their friends. I myself am an example of this, the social interaction lured me into these things at a young age and the continuing development of these ideas and introduction of many new concepts will always spark my interest.

I believe that as technology is improving, the age of which we access most of these things is becoming lower and lower e.g in my family my younger brother got his first mobile phone a few years younger than i was when i first got mine and i believe this would be a common trend in most house holds simply because this technology is increasing expected to be a part of most peoples lives, even young teenagers and even more so as the years pass by. Who knows maybe in ten years time the first thing a new born baby gets thrust into their little hands isnt a bottle or a rattle, but a mobile phone! hahaha lets hope it doesnt get to that!

I would say that i have acquaintances that i have met on the net one way or another, but would'nt call them friends. Anyone I consider to be my friend i make a point of knowing who they are in person. I think relationships that are face to face and those that are web based are very different because you have a much better idea of who your dealing with when meeting in person appose to presuming and making assumptions over the internet. It is also important to take into account how important details in communication are non-exsistant in web based communication such as; tone of voice, body language, expression etc these are now replaced by quirky sounds and 'emoticons' and also the change in spelling and grammer in instant messaging e.g "wat doin l8r.wanna go 2dat movie from yday.cod b a larf?wb" which can be fun and sometimes time consuming (if you are an excellent de-coder) but do they really convey the true ideals and meaning of communication...i think not...

Thanks for taking the time and interest

Week 3 - Activity 1

Wow i made it through the 1st 2 weeks of uni...who would have thought!
In this tute we have not one but two mind boggling tasks; the 1st being make 'friends' with three other members of the class and link their blogs to mine. Already ive met Ryan, who has a really cool blog, a lot more course orientated stuff than mine so I think I should be taking notes of that lol but disapointingly enough he is a roosters fan! "Ryan just remind me where the roosters finished last year on the table?" haha well I follow the sharks which on current form I dont have that much to laugh about (especially while Kimmorley is still in the team, let alone captian!) but hey new season about to start and ironically Cronulla now have the ex-roosters coach Ricky Stuart...he better not make my team a disaster story like he did to the roosters last year! Oh well the 2007 season so is just around the corner so we will have to wait and see. Ok back to business (sorry got a bit sidetracked on such a passionate thing like footy...) Others members include stevey and Ina who both seem like really cool girls. So after linking blogs together we are to leave comments on their blogs...only positive ones, i know how disapointing haha nah jk, i would'nt do that. Well I betta stop crapping on about football and do some serious work

Thanks for reading

Paul Gallen: A clear standout player throught '06' season including Debuting in State of Origin.
Definately one to watch in '07' and I would love to see him take the captiancy.
